Trans Awareness Week 2023

Each year between November 13–19, we participate in Transgender Awareness Week. This is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the trans community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community

The Maternal Pandemic

A report published this week outlines the findings of a rapid impact review of COVID-19’s impact on maternal mental health and services by the Maternal Mental Health Alliance and Centre for Maternal Health. A combination of lockdown, economic uncertainty, job insecurity, and the impact of the virus itself, coupled with the reduced access to vital perinatal and mental health services, is likely to have long-term consequences for women and their families, as well as for health services and provisions

Celebrating: Dr Chiara Beccalossi - School of History and Heritage

Since 2015, Chiara has been working to raise awareness of trans issues and has spearheaded the Transitional States programme, which is supported by the Welcome Trust. She has been organising events for LGBT+ History Month since 2018, which is now a regular feature at the University of Lincoln. Chiara was included in the Global OUTstanding 100 LGBT+ Future Leaders’ List, January 2021

Reflections on what’s changed about coming out as a trans young person

At the moment, there seems to be a lot of news coverage regarding rising numbers of trans young people seeking help, with a particular focus on young trans men. Often this coverage seems to suggest there’s something alarming about this rise, and that perhaps teenagers are just “confused” or too young to know what they need.

Raising the Flag to LGBTQ+ History Month

LGBT+ history month happens every February. Its mission is to promote equality and diversity through improving the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities and stories, raising awareness of, and educating people about, relevant issues and making institutions safe spaces for all LGBTQ+ people. This year’s theme is ‘Body, Mind and Spirit’, and in recognition of the challenging times we are currently living through, we will be promoting mental health and wellbeing as part of our celebrations this year.

Academics come from Mars

Metaphorically speaking, practitioners and researchers are often planets apart – like Venus and Mars. In the way they think, the way they challenge, their approach, their vision, their solution. Undoubtedly there is some common ground – usually misunderstanding, suspicion, a desire to keep at a distance, a lack of engagement with each other’s realities. If only these misunderstandings were resolved, and suspicions laid to rest, it would become abundantly clear how invaluable, how insightful, how disruptive, how transformative, practitioner–researcher collaborations will become

Unequal Impact of Covid-19

As we move through this pandemic, it has become abundantly clear that there are differential impacts across a number of characteristic groups (age, sex, ethnicity). Covid-19 has certainly thrown a spotlight on the structural inequalities in our society (and in many cases entrenching them). Our recent submission to the UK Parliament's Women and Equalities Committee outlines the unequal impact of COVID-19 on women and black and minority ethnic (BAME) groups.
