National award highlights University’s commitment to gender equality

The University of Lincoln has been recognised for its dedication to gender equality with a Silver Athena Swan Award. The University received its first Bronze Athena Swan Award in 2014. Ten years on, we celebrate our first institutional silver award and the progress this represents towards gender equality. The University is one of a select number of UK universities to achieve a silver award.

Women’s History Month 2024

March is Women's History Month and a time to highlight and reflect on how women have historically been discriminated against and overlooked both in their daily lives, in the historical record and for their contributions across society. It is a time to re-evaluate and challenge how the past has been presented and to celebrate the achievements of women, past and present.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

As we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science this February, I am struck by some of the gender equality problems women still face in STEM. The United Nations, who promote the event, say that even in 2023 women are still under-represented in fields such as engineering and computer science. And those female scientists who do persist, tend to have shorter, less well-paid careers and are often passed over for promotion

On the 3rd day of Activism, my true love gave to me: a march for women’s equality

There is an alleyway in Leeds where I live, that I now know in my head as ‘the r*pe alley’. It didn’t used to be this way – well it did, but I just didn’t know it yet. It was just the alleyway I used to get home, used to go to school or work. It was convenient, decorated in spray paint tags and color bursts and tree covered. I walked this alley so many times in the dark, alone after having just parted ways with friends, and at those times, I didn’t feel frightened

Role reversal - How do couples make the decision?

Families and households have changed massively over the past decades. Alongside these changes, some couples are arranging work and family roles non-normatively, with the father assuming primary responsibility for childcare and the mother bearing primary responsibility for breadwinning. Because these family arrangements are so recent and rare, little is known about the circumstances and considerations that lead to the allocation of family roles

Who does what when couples swap roles?

A growing body of research has attempted to understand the gender gap in the allocation of family and work roles. Research points to couples who arrange work and family roles non-normatively as drivers of change in gender division of labour. Because those family arrangements are so recent and rare, little is known about the daily routines of those couples
