Sadly missed
With great sadness, we celebrate the life and achievements of Professor Jacqui Briggs, Director (Social Science) of the Eleanor Glanville Centre, who passed away unexpectedly on 3rd July
Jacqui, Professor for the Public Understanding of Political Science, was the Head of the School of Social and Political Sciences. As a founding Director of the Eleanor Glanville Centre, Jacqui played a pivotal role in our development in 2016, and always had great ideas for the Centre's future — including a plan to buy a wonderful old Victorian House to accommodate the Centre in style — One day Jacqui!!
Her interests included Anti-Politics, Thinking Politics and Gender, Globalisation and Sexuality, and she was passionate about increasing women’s role in politics and political activism. Her recent research centred on youth political participation, young women and politics, and the issue of compulsory voting, and she was the Associate Editor for the journal European Political Science.
Outside of the University, Jacqui was an active member of the Political Science Association (PSA), representing them on the Board of the Campaign for Social Science and convening one of their specialist groups, Young People and Politics. Her academic and professional activities evidenced her strong commitment to, and passion for, achieving equality and diversity within the political arena.
Jacqui was a warm, funny and highly supportive colleague and will be sadly missed by all at the Eleanor Glanville Centre. Our condolences go to her family and friends.
A JustGiving crowdfunding page has been set up in Jacqui’s memory to raise money for The Parliament Project — a non-partisan organisation working to increase the number of women in elected office, by inspiring, encouraging and empowering women to stand.
