Calendar 2018-19
The Saturday Club workshops continue to provide a variety of science-themed workshops to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers
Summer 2018
Sweet Summer Science
Host: School of Chemistry
Date: 7 July 2018
Sweet Summer Science will give the girls a chance to grow a magic rock garden out of metal salts, overstigate the colours of M&Ms by separating the food colourings using paper chromatography, prepare crystal ice-cream cones and study the super-cooling processes in making ice-cream, hopefully keeping them cool in the middle of this summer heatwave!
Autumn 2018
It's All in Your Head!
Host: School of Psychology
Date: 20 October 2018
How does your brain respond to changes in the world around you? How do we recognise faces? How do we cope with multitasking? These are just a few of the questions that researchers in the School of Psychology at the University of Lincoln are answering right now. It’s All In Your Head will give girls the chance to learn about the science of psychology and even collect data on their very own experiment. This hands-on, interactive morning will also include some myth busting about psychology – do we really only use 10% of our brains? (Spoiler alert, no). We hope you can join us to try out being a psychological scientist!
Winter 2019
The building blocks of life - can you build it?
Host: School of Life Sciences
Date: 19 January 2019
DNA and Biomolecules: The building blocks of life - In this workshop the girls will learn how to extract and purify DNA from cells, build protein structures with the help of sweeties and try their hand at breaking the biological code...
Spring 2019
The Humpty Dumpty Rescue Operation
Host: School of Mathematics & Physics
Date: 30 March 2019
This workshop is designed to explore Newton’s law of motion and use physics law in an Easter time experience. The girls will use logic and teamwork to explore concepts like force, friction, and gravity.
2019 Newton Graduation
Host: Eleanor Glanville Centre
Date: 18 May 2019
Time: 1 - 3pm
With Special Guest Speaker Dr Suzie Imber, Planetary Scientist and winner of the 2017 BBC2 television programme: Astronauts, Do You Have What It Takes? The talk will be followed by presentation of certificates to the Year 3 girls and lunch. The will also have a chance to meet and chat with Suzie about her amazing adventures!
