Dr Patrick Hylton: Black and Brown RAF Personnel of the Second World War
10 Oct
Join the EGI for Dr Patrick Hylton's online talk, where he will narrate some of the experiences of West Indian Service Personnel of World War II. Patrick's fascinating talk, as part of our BHM Programme, will witness the problems of culture, climate, hostility, and blatant racism these men and women encountered as they took up arms to fight for their 'motherland' - Britain.
"We gon' fight (we gon' fight), we'll have to fight (we gon' fight), We gonna fight (we gon' fight), fight for our rights!"
Zimbabwe by Bob Marley
In this talk Patrick will narrate some of the experiences of West Indian Service Personnel of World War II. The contributions of these people are an often-overlooked chapter in the history of the Allied war effort. From oral accounts given by people who had "never heard of racism until" they got to Britain, this talk will witness the problems of culture, climate, hostility, and blatant racism these men and women encountered as they took up arms to fight for their 'motherland' - Britain. A motherland that was bewildering to most as they surveyed a landscape where people with black hair, blond hair, ginger hair, brown eyes, black eyes, and blues eyes left them wondering "where do these people come from?" and experiences that left them questioning where is this motherland?
