The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), also known as the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, has been observed annually on November 20 as a day to remember and honour those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia.
Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender woman, in response to the murder of transgender woman Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts. It has slowly evolved from the web-based project started by Smith into an international day of action. By 2010, TDoR was being observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 countries.
In the past 12 months, 350 trans and gender-diverse people were reported killed globally, representing a 6% increase in reported murders in the previous 12 month period. The majority of the murders occurred in Brazil (152), Mexico (57), and the United States (28), adding up to a total of 3664 reported cases in 75 countries and territories worldwide between 1 January 2008 and 30 September 2020.
