Change the Story: How Can Football Tackle the Elimination of Violence Against Women?
07 Dec
Online
The championing of women and girls in football has gained momentum over recent years with an increased focus on a drive for equity for women footballers, supporters and football club employees. Join the EGI for this online panel discussion where speakers will draw on their own experiences of researching and working within football and tackling gender-based violence to consider what role football can and should play in tackling the elimination of violence against women.
In 2020, a survey for Women in Football revealed that 66% of respondents felt they had personally experienced some form of gender discrimination within the footballing workplace and 82% having experienced gendered obstacles in their football career In 2022, Her Game Too disclosed they received more than 80 reports of sexual harassment or abuse at football matches, with the true figure likely to be much higher due to a reluctance to report, or awareness of how to disclose. Scholars of gender-based violence have highlighted that acknowledging and addressing the “continuum of violence” and gender inequality can play a significant part in eliminating violence against women. Drawing on their own experiences of researching and working within football and tackling gender-based violence, this panel will discuss what role football can and should play in tackling the elimination of violence against women.
