IPI2019 is a 3-day international conference, providing a multi-disciplinary forum for researchers, authors, artists and activists to raise awareness of intersex issues, and discuss the latest cutting-edge research from a broad range of specialisms.

IPI2019: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Intersex (17-19 JULY 2019)

People with intersex traits have naturally occurring sex characteristics which are considered to sit outside the binary norms associated with male and female bodies. Intersex bodies are frequently labelled ‘disordered’ and are subjected to treatment to ‘correct’ aspects of the body which are not considered to fit within the notions of a ‘typical’ male or female body. Intersex has received a growing amount of attention since the early-1990s from a variety of specialists. This conference offers the opportunity for people from all disciplines to come together to share their knowledge of intersex and is motivated by a need to combine ideas and expertise to increase knowledge, visibility and acceptance of intersex. We welcome attendance from postgraduate students, academics, activists and advocates working in the area of intersex, interested members of the public, medical practitioners, legal specialists, authors, artists, and anyone who has an interest in intersex issues. This conference will provide a safe space for intersex and non-intersex attendees to network in order to further the development of intersex knowledge.

Dr Lih-Mei Liao

Keynote speaker

One of the most significant roles in my career is in the shaping of the multidisciplinary team for people with differences in chromosomal, gonadal and anatomical sex development. I have helped to produce evidence to highlight some of the negative aspects of traditional medical management. As a co-founder of the European Network for the Psychosocial Studies of Intersex/Diverse Sex Development (www.europsi.org) and Critical Sexology Seminar (www.criticalsexology.org.uk), I have been active in building bridges between communities of health professionals, scholars and service users, dialogue between whom is critical for realising ethically and psychosocially informed approaches to medically benign genital differences.

Keynote speaker

Del LaGrace Volcano is a gender-variant visual artist whose work is designed to disrupt norm compliant socio-cultural binaries using visceral pleasure and political provocation as primary strategies of resistance. Volcano is considered one of the world’s leading HBT-QI cultural producers working for social justice and full human rights for all.

"As a gender variant visual artist, I access ‘technologies of gender’ in order to amplify rather than erase the hermaphroditic traces of my body. I believe in crossing the line as many times as it takes to build a bridge we can all walk across"
